We’d like to congratulate Ellie Greenwood for her victory in the Western States 100 Endurance Race last weekend! Ellie crossed the finish line in 17:55, finishing first in the women’s race and 18th overall. The race was an impressive win for the 32-year-old Scotland native; not only was this her first time entering the race but her first 100 mile race as well.
Check out the video from irunFar.com to see how her race went.
We have to take a quick water break to talk about our former collegue at the San Francisco Chronicle (I spent 10 years as a coffee-drinking/potty mouth/visual journalist/night owl), Jose Antonio Vargas. A young, fast-talking, ambitious and charismatic reporter, Jose revealed to the world yesterday in a piece published in the New York Times Magazine that he is an undocumented immigrant living and working in America. Jose has achieved much in his journalism career; a coveted job at the Washington Post where he won a Pulitzer Prize, jobs at the Huffington Post and high profile pieces for The New Yorker covering Mark Zuckerberg – he’s proof that hard work and a good head on your shoulders can take you far in America.
We were shocked by his revelations but also deeply inspired by the courage and honesty it took to come out to the world that you are an illegal immigrant. His story has rumbled through the journalism world, garnering attention and criticism. Check out Jose’s newest project, Define American; an organization seeking to bring new voices and perspectives to the immigration debate.
